Washington, DC – The Armenian National Institute (ANI) this week welcomed news that the Encyclopedia of Genocide has received CHOICE Magazine’s Outstanding Academic Title 2000 award, a positive review in Holocaust icon Simon Wiesenthal’s esteemed newsletter, and the launching of its electronic version by publisher ABC-CLIO.

CHOICE Magazine and web site is the popular source for book reviews of interest for those in higher education. Most academic libraries, particularly those in the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia, use CHOICE for selecting and purchasing materials. Simon Wiesenthal’s newsletter, a publication of the Association of Jewish Victims of the Nazi Regime, is highly regarded, particularly in the academic and think tank communities. The newsletter calls the Encyclopedia of Genocide “significant” and “thorough.” The Encyclopedia’s Editor-in-Chief Dr. Israel Charny said, “Those who know his [Simon Wiesenthal’s] newsletter style, and also the esteem in which it is held by all those who receive it around the world, know that this kind of summary represents Simon Wiesenthal’s acceptance and praise.”

Encyclopedia publisher ABC-CLIO also announced that it expects to launch an electronic edition in June of this year. The official notice includes a detailed description of the reference book and includes praiseworthy reviews from both academic and popular sources. The Encyclopedia’s publishers are now describing it as an “Award Winner Encyclopedia.”

“ANI is proud to be associated with this outstanding publication and pleased that it continues to receive sterling reviews in the academic and popular press as well as from someone as distinguished as Simon Wiesenthal,” said ANI Board of Directors Chairman Robert A. Kaloosdian. “The Encyclopedia provides thorough coverage of the Armenian Genocide and its awards and reviews draw attention to these horrific events. In so doing, it is our hope that such education will lead to a world where the threat of genocide is anticipated and prevented,” he added.

The Encyclopedia of Genocide, conceived by Dr. Israel Charny, Executive Director of the Institute on the Holocaust and Genocide in Jerusalem, is considered to be the first reference work to chart the full extent of the subject with objectivity and authority. Charny is the author of a number of major publications on the subject of genocide and the editor of one of the main reference works in the field of genocide studies, a four-volume series Genocide: A Critical Bibliographic Review.

ANI Director Dr. Rouben Adalian is an Associate Editor and worked closely with Dr. Charny and others in producing the two-volume resource. Adalian is the author of a number of works on Armenian history and is the compiler and editor of Armenian Genocide in the U.S. Archives, the largest collection of documentary evidence issued to date. The Encyclopedia of Genocide also includes some 20 entries by Adalian, with additional contributions by Dr. Vahakn Dadrian and Dr. Peter Balakian.
