MORE U.S. STATES GO ON RECORD AFFIRMING ARMENIAN GENOCIDE
July 12, 2000
Washington, DC – Nine more American states this year joined the growing list of those officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide of 1915. According to the Armenian National Institute’s latest figures, there are now 24 states on record supporting formal affirmation of the United States’ historical record of recognition from the time of the 1915 Genocide.
Seventy-two resolutions and proclamations have been issued across the United States in the past 25 years. Of the 24 American states recognizing the Genocide, five – California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts – have also included the Genocide in their public-school curricula. This year, the State of Maine passed its first-ever legislative resolution while the Nevada state government issued its first proclamation.
The states list, their statements and related information are available on the ANI web site: www.armenian-genocide.org/affirmation. ANI’s research team will continue to track the growing national and international momentum to affirm the Armenian Genocide, publicizing new developments as they are announced.
“I have no doubt that this groundswell of support in state capitals across the country for official recognition of the Genocide will ultimately drive the U.S. government to formally re-affirm its historical record of recognition,” said Robert A. Kaloosdian, Chairman of the Armenian National Institute’s (ANI) Board of Governors. "The U.S. need only look into its own archives to be reminded of its early official condemnation of the Armenian Genocide in 1915 and of the extent of the public outcry and humanitarian assistance rendered in response."
The Armenian National Institute is dedicated to the study, research, and affirmation of the Armenian Genocide.
